This is an interdisciplinary seminar designed to allow law, medical, nursing, pharmacy, and public health students and faculty an opportunity to discuss topics of mutual interest in a structured and collegial learning environment.

The group will discuss readings from New York Times Bestsellers The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (2010) by Rebecca Skloot and The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer (2011) by Siddhartha Mukherjee. The Immortal Life has been selected for over 60 Best of the Year Lists; Mukherjee received the Pulitzer Prize in 2011 for his work. Participants will provide their own copies of the books.

Participants will meet on four Wednesday evenings during the Fall 2012 academic term:

  • Wednesday, September 12, 2012, emphasizing medicine- and public health-related topics
  • Wednesday, October 3, 2012, emphasizing law-related topics
  • Wednesday, October 24, 2012, emphasizing pharmacy-related topics
  • Wednesday, November 14, 2011, emphasizing nursing-related topics

Each session will begin at 5:30 PM and end no later than 7:30 PM. A meal will be served about 6:00 PM during each session. All the sessions will be held in the O’Brien Board Room in the Executive Suite of Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, 106 New Scotland Avenue, Albany, New York 12208-3492. The first seminar – The Great Influenza Seminar, information available at http://tgiseminar.wordpress.com/ – was organized in 2011 at the suggestion of Sarah L. Scarpace, PharmD, BCOP, Assistant Dean for Pharmacy Professional Affairs, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences with Glenda B. Kelman, PhD, ACNP-BC, Chair of the Department of Nursing, The Sage Colleges, Troy and Albany, Evelyn M. Tenenbaum, JD, Lawyering Professor, Albany Law School, and Bruce D. White, DO, JD, Director, Alden March Bioethics Institute, Albany Medical College.

This seminar idea grew from experience with an interdisciplinary faculty enrichment seminar held at Albany Medical Center during the 2010-11 academic year. The faculty enrichment seminar was sponsored by the Sosa Academy of Medical Sciences at Albany Medical College.

Albany College of Pharmacy students who participate in the seminar will be enrolled in a course at the pharmacy school for credit. The course number and name is PHM 545 – Interprofessional Health Care Issues; Dr. Scarpace is the instructor of record. The Sage Colleges nursing students who participate in the seminar will be enrolled in a course at the nursing school for credit. The course number and name is Nsg 599 – Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Issues; Drs. Kelman and Joan Dacher are the instructors of record.
